Dissolving gas in liquid is not an easy task. This is exactly the reason why Jongia Mixing Technology developed its own Gas Inducing Mixer. The mixer is designed to make a gas/liquid dispersion. This means dissolving the gas in a liquid to be able to carry out a (chemical/biochemical) reaction.  

How it works
The Gas Inducing Mixer is mostly applicable for gas/liquid reactions, but also  often used in hydrogenation (curing) processes, especially for hydrogenation of fats (fatty acids) in the food industry. A large number of oils and fats in food products are hydrogenated by means of hydrogenation of the double bond(s) to obtain a higher solidification point. A hydrogenation reactor traditionally works with a so-called ‘sparger’ for the main gas supply. In such a  case, the gas is recirculated from the headspace of the reactor which creates a large vortex. However Gas Inducing Mixer designed by Jongia Mixing Technology, works differently. Here, the gas is recirculated through the hollow agitator shaft and is reintroduced through the mixing element. This creates an underpressure, which causes the gas to be dispersed into the liquid once again. The agitator thus ensures that the gas from the headspace of the reactor is recirculated into the liquid. 

A unique agitator
The Gas Inducing Mixer, designed by Jongia Mixing Technology, is unique because of the position of the mixing element. This element is placed close to the liquid’s surface. As a result, the hydrostatic pressure is relatively low, which makes it possible to work with a larger mixing element at a lower speed. As a result, other process parameters, such as heat transfer and mixing, become therefor much  more efficient. The Gas Inducing Mixer is characterized by the fact that the mixer extracts the gas from the surface by itself. It is a system that recirculates the (unused) gas from the headspace of the reactor. However, its placement close to the liquid’s surface is also unique. Similar systems on the market have a gasifying mixing element placed at the bottom of the reactor, yet not with the same recirculating advantages that Jongia’s unique system has. Due to the unique positioning of the Gas Inducing Mixer, the gas intake capacity is higher and consequently the gas concentration in the fluid becomes also higher. This means that less catalyst is required and productivity is increased at the same time. Thanks to this innovative design, the Gas Inducing Mixer can run at much lower speed and thus works below critical speed. This eliminates irregular loads on the shaft, bearings and couplings.
